The Church of St Dunstan and All Saints
Historical Text
This was the main medieval church of East London. A church was founded here by St Dunstan in 952 AD. A larger church was built in the 13th century and was altered in the 15th century to form the basis of today's church. The graveyard was used for burials in the Great Plague. Grade I listed.
Artistic Response
St. Dunstan's was once know as the Church of the High Seas and many sailors are buried in the Churchyard; the text inside the faith chest is taken from one the church's monuments. It floats in a golden space beyond which there is a simple line drawing of the inside of the church, which highlights the symmetry, clarity and simplicity of the medieval architecture.
