Brick Lane Jamme Masjid

Historical Text

This building was built in 1743 as a supporting chapel for the French Huguenot (Protestant) Church in the City of London, to meet the needs of the many French refugees in the area. In 1819 it became a Methodist chapel, and from 1897 to 1976 it was Spitalfields' Great Synagogue. It was converted into the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid in 1976. Grade II listed.

Artistic Response

Duplicating and expanding the space of the faith chest, detailed drawings push beyond the boundaries of the box. Stray objects become animated, imagining the relationship with others who have used and experienced the space before.
